Chapter 8 - The Glass Vault

Sweat poured down my face as I stripped the plastic casing off the primary electrical wires.
I had dismantled hundreds of military-grade locking systems during my tours overseas.
But my hands had never shaken like this before.
The digital timer flashed mercilessly in bright red numbers above my head.
Three minutes exactly.
Julian laughed through the crackling intercom speaker.
"You can't hotwire a titanium biometric lock with a cheap pocket knife," he mocked.
I ignored him, carefully crossing the blue copper wire with the exposed yellow grounding cable.
Sparks violently showered my face, burning tiny holes into my shirt.
The heavy hydraulic bolts inside the door groaned loudly.
Audrey squeezed her eyes shut as Julian pulled her head back forcefully by her hair.
"Two minutes, old man," Julian sang cheerfully.
I found the main power relay hidden deep behind the metal circuit board.
I jammed the blade of my knife directly into the primary fuse box.
A massive surge of electricity shot aggressively up my arm, throwing me backward onto the concrete floor.
The digital timer above the door completely shorted out and went black.
A loud, beautiful clank echoed through the basement as the heavy titanium bolts retracted.
The massive circular vault door swung slowly open.
I stood up, my right arm completely numb from the electrical shock.
I stepped slowly inside the brightly lit vault.
Julian’s eyes widened in genuine panic as he realized his impenetrable door had failed.
He dropped the hunting knife and pulled a heavy black handgun from his waistband.
He aimed the barrel directly at Audrey’s head.
"Don't take another step!" Julian screamed, his confident voice finally cracking with fear.
I stopped moving, keeping my hands clearly visible.
"Let her go, Julian," I said calmly. "The bomb is disabled."
Julian's hand shook violently as he kept the gun pressed against her temple.
Suddenly, Audrey snapped her head forward and bit down savagely on Julian's wrist.
Julian screamed and stumbled backward, accidentally dropping the handgun to the floor.
May you like
Audrey kicked the gun away with her tied legs.
I lunged forward with everything I had left.
