Chapter 5 - Desperate Measures

Marcus was not a man who knew how to lose gracefully. Desperate, facing jail time, and completely broke, he attempted a Hail Mary. He filed an emergency injunction in probate court, claiming that Arthur and Dr. Aris had conspired to brainwash me. He demanded that I be declared legally incompetent and that he be appointed my immediate conservator.

I didn't send lawyers to the hearing. I went myself.

I walked into the courtroom wearing a tailored navy suit, leaning on a silver-handled cane, but standing perfectly straight. The collective gasp from Marcus's legal team was audible. They had expected a woman on a gurney.

When the judge asked me to state my name and address, I didn't just answer. I recited the quarterly earnings of Crestview Freight, the exact legal statutes of my employee trust, and the routing numbers of the accounts Marcus had attempted to drain.

“Your Honor,” I said clearly, staring directly at my trembling nephew. “The only incompetence in this room is the plaintiff's inability to execute a successful con.”

The judge threw the case out in under twelve minutes and slapped Marcus with a heavy fine for a frivolous lawsuit. The defeat in his eyes was absolute.
