Chapter 4 - Viral Justice

By Tuesday morning, the drama had spilled out of the hospital and onto the internet. A junior paralegal at Marcus’s firm—disgusted by his boss’s actions—had anonymously leaked the story to a prominent business blog. The headline read: TECH BRO TRIES TO STEAL DYING AUNT'S FREIGHT EMPIRE; GETS ARRESTED AT HER DEATHBED.

The internet exploded. Facebook groups dedicated to corporate drama and family gossip shared the article tens of thousands of times. My company's stock, rather than dipping from the scandal, surged as the public rallied behind the "badass grandmother of logistics."

Arthur visited my private recovery suite with a stack of printouts. “Marcus is out on bail, but his reputation is ash. His investors for the Silicon Valley startup pulled out this morning. No one wants to fund a man caught on tape trying to rob a hospice patient.”

“And Brenda?” I asked, sipping green tea.

“Charged with felony theft. The judge confiscated her passport. She’s currently begging her country club friends for bail money, but strangely, no one is picking up the phone.”

I smiled. High society loves a winner, but they run from a scandal like rats from a sinking ship. My family was entirely isolated, trapped in a cage of their own making.
