Chapter 4 - The Master Forger

I stared at the forged signature, my mind racing to understand how he had pulled this off.
I remembered a night six months ago when Julian claimed we needed to sign standard tax returns.
He had rushed me, sliding papers across the kitchen counter while I was cooking dinner.
I had trusted my husband implicitly and signed exactly where he pointed without reading the fine print.
He had buried a massive corporate liability clause underneath a stack of mundane household documents.
"You are a despicable coward, Julian," my father growled, stepping forward to crush him.
Julian did not flinch, holding the document up like a shield against a dragon.
"If you execute this hostile takeover, Clarissa assumes the debt, and she will go to federal prison for bank fraud," Julian threatened confidently.
Chloe suddenly strutted back to Julian's side, her arrogance returning in full force.
"You really thought you could outsmart us, you naive little housewife?" Chloe mocked me, tossing her hair.
"Julian is a genius, and you are just a stepping stone for our future," she sneered.
The room was tense, the wealthy guests watching the drama unfold like a live theater performance.
My father remained perfectly calm, adjusting his silk tie with a relaxed sigh.
"You are absolutely right, Julian, forging documents is a very serious federal crime," my father agreed softly.
Julian frowned, confused by my father's lack of panic.
The heavy double doors of the ballroom suddenly burst open, hitting the walls with a deafening crash.
A dozen federal agents wearing tactical windbreakers stormed into the room, their badges gleaming under the chandeliers.
Julian smiled, pointing a finger directly at my chest.
"Arrest her, she is the guarantor of the fraudulent loans!" Julian shouted to the lead agent.
The lead agent walked right past me, completely ignoring Julian's frantic orders.
He marched directly up to Chloe, grabbing her arm forcefully and spinning her around.
"Chloe Miller, you are under arrest for industrial espionage, wire fraud, and grand larceny," the agent declared loudly.
Chloe screamed in terror as the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.
Julian stepped back in pure shock, completely abandoning his mistress to the authorities.
"What is going on, Julian, do something!" Chloe shrieked, struggling against the federal agents.
"I have no idea who this woman is," Julian lied flawlessly, raising his hands in surrender.

The lead agent turned to Julian with a grim, humorless smile on his face.
"We know you don't know who she is, Mr. Cross, because Chloe Miller isn't her real name."
