Chapter 10 - A Future Secured

Marcus's manic screams faded as the sheriff's deputies shoved him into the back of a patrol car.
I stood on the pool deck of the mansion I now legally owned, feeling a massive weight lift from my shoulders.
The police had already informed me that the cartel hitmen had been arrested outside the precinct before they could reach my brother.
Marcus was going back to a federal holding cell, where he would spend the next twenty years reflecting on his monumental greed.
My parents, utterly humiliated by the public scandal and completely broke, fled the state to live in a cheap motel.
I had completely dismantled the toxic family that had tried to keep me in the shadows for my entire life.
I walked back to my armored SUV where Daniel was safely sitting and eating a bag of fruit snacks.
"Are we going back to our apartment, Mom?" Daniel asked with a bright, innocent smile.
"No, sweetheart, we are never going back to that small apartment ever again," I promised him.
I drove him to a stunning, secure penthouse overlooking the entire Denver skyline that I had secretly purchased a year ago.
When Daniel walked inside and saw his massive new bedroom filled with toys and a telescope, he hugged me so tightly I thought my heart would burst.
He finally had the incredible, limitless future he truly deserved, completely free from the cruelty of my brother.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sun set over the beautiful mountains, finally feeling entirely at peace.
The next morning, I was sitting at my sleek new kitchen island drinking coffee when the building's private concierge brought up my mail.
Hidden between a stack of corporate reports was a thick, black envelope sealed with a familiar, terrifying wax crest.
I broke the seal and pulled out a single, handwritten letter that made the blood freeze completely in my veins.

The letter contained a recent photograph of Daniel playing in his new room, taken from a highly classified sniper scope.
The terrifying message simply read: "You raised my son well, Elena, but it is time for the true head of the syndicate to take his heir back."
