Chapter 9 - The Hostage Situation

I stared at the barrel of the gun, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

The bank manager laughed and revealed he was getting a fifty percent cut of the con.

He had been facilitating her fraudulent wire transfers for years without ever getting caught.

Ryan dropped to his knees, finally understanding that he was being played the entire time.

He looked at me with tears in his eyes, begging me to save him from the mess he created.

I felt absolutely no sympathy for the man who left my children crying in a foreign airport.

The girlfriend ordered Marcus to toss his weapon onto the floor and kick it away.

Marcus raised his hands slowly, pretending to comply with her aggressive demands.

The bank manager noticed Marcus hesitating and threatened to shoot me himself if the detective tried anything.

I looked deeply into Marcus's eyes and gave him a subtle, almost invisible nod toward the heavy glass window.

I knew the safety glass facing the lobby was the only weak point in the room.

Marcus suddenly kicked a heavy brass chair straight through the office window, shattering the glass completely.

The sudden, deafening explosion of noise and glass startled everyone in the room.

The girlfriend panicked, lost her strict trigger discipline, and accidentally pulled the trigger.

The gunshot echoed through the bank lobby, sending customers screaming toward the exits.
