Chapter 4 - The Forged Signature

The basement was freezing, and my children shivered in the dark.

I wrapped my heavy winter coat around my daughter and son to keep them warm.

I quietly climbed the wooden stairs and pressed my ear directly against the cold floorboards.

The police chief joked with my mother about how much money they were all going to make.

He agreed to stamp the forged signature in exchange for a fifty percent cut of the sale.

I pulled out my phone and hit the record button to capture every single damning word.

They discussed how easy it was to leave me stranded in Portugal with no resources.

My mother actually laughed at the thought of her own grandchildren sleeping on an airport floor.

My heart turned to absolute ice at the sheer cruelty of her betrayal.

She stated that I was always too weak to deserve the inheritance Grandma left me.

Ryan proudly laid the fake deed on the dining room table and handed the chief a pen.

I held my phone closer to the ceiling, making sure the audio was crystal clear.

I had the definitive proof needed to send all three of them to federal prison.

Suddenly, my son accidentally dropped his heavy plastic dinosaur toy out of his backpack.

The hard plastic slammed onto the concrete basement floor with a deafening thud.

The loud noise echoed violently through the entire house, interrupting the conversation above.

The footsteps in the dining room stopped instantly, replaced by a tense and heavy silence.

I heard Ryan curse under his breath and push his chair back from the table.

The brass handle of the basement door slowly began to turn.
