Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate

The bullet shattered a decorative vase just inches from my head, spraying porcelain everywhere.

Marcus instantly drew his weapon and tackled the corrupt bank manager to the floor.

I lunged forward with everything I had and grabbed the girlfriend's wrist, twisting it violently.

She screamed in pain and dropped the silver pistol onto the carpet.

Uniformed officers flooded into the bank, alerted by the gunshot and the broken glass.

They slapped heavy steel handcuffs on the girlfriend, the bank manager, and a sobbing Ryan.

Ryan begged me to forgive him as they dragged him away, pleading for a second chance.

I looked him dead in the eye and told him he was no longer my brother.

My mother and the corrupt sheriff were arrested later that afternoon based on my audio recording.

The bank legally reversed the fraudulent transfer and permanently secured the deed to my house in my name.

I returned home with my children, finally safe and victorious in the house my grandmother left me.

We spent the evening ordering pizza, laughing, and building a blanket fort in our living room.

Later that night, I went down to the basement to clean up the mess from our frantic escape.

Behind the old coal chute, I noticed a loose brick in the foundation that I had never seen before.

I pried it open and found a sealed envelope addressed to me in my late husband's unmistakable handwriting.

The letter stated that his fatal car crash was not an accident, and the people responsible were still watching me.
