Chapter 8 - The Highway Ambush

The masked man aimed the heavy shotgun directly at the paramedic's chest.
"Get out of the rig, right now!" the gunman roared over the screaming sirens.
The terrified paramedics raised their hands and scrambled out the back doors onto the rainy highway.
I threw my body protectively over Emmett, shielding him from the masked attacker.
The gunman climbed inside, slammed the heavy metal doors shut, and yelled at the driver to hit the gas.
The ambulance lurched forward with terrifying speed, tossing me to the floor of the cabin.
"Who are you?" I screamed, desperately reaching for a heavy oxygen tank to use as a weapon.
The man pulled down his black tactical mask, revealing a face I recognized immediately.
It was Mark, my manipulative ex-boyfriend who had mysteriously vanished three years ago.
"Hello, Jenna," Mark smirked, keeping the shotgun leveled perfectly at my head. "Did you really think Julian was the mastermind behind all this?"
My blood ran cold as Mark casually leaned against the medical cabinets.
"You disappeared after stealing my life savings, Mark," I whispered, gripping the oxygen tank tighter.
"I didn't just steal your savings, sweetheart," Mark laughed cruelly. "I stole your entire business model and sold it to the highest bidders on the dark web."
Mark explained that he had been the one pulling Julian's strings from the shadows, orchestrating the corporate war.
He wanted Emmett's entire tech empire, and he needed me to unlock the final security firewalls.
"Transfer ownership of Emmett's shares to my offshore account, or I finish the job Julian started," Mark threatened.
Emmett groaned on the stretcher, his vital monitors beeping frantically as his blood pressure dropped.
"I need my laptop to do the transfer, Mark," I lied, keeping my voice surprisingly steady.
Mark tossed my silver clutch purse onto the floor at my feet.
"Do it fast, Jenna, because he doesn't have much time left," Mark demanded, racking the shotgun for emphasis.
I pulled my phone from the purse, pretending to log into the corporate banking portal.
Instead, I opened the custom medical application that controlled Emmett's pacemaker and biometric implants.

I looked Mark dead in the eye and pressed the emergency defibrillator override button.
The medical stretcher violently discharged two thousand volts of electricity directly through the metal frame.
