Chapter 9 - The Federal Intervention

The Chief of Police slammed the cruiser door shut and sprinted back toward the lake house.
I sat in the quiet dark for another twenty minutes, watching the chaotic red and blue lights bounce off the trees.
Finally, a black, unmarked SUV pulled into the driveway, cutting off two local police cars.
A tall woman in a sharp federal suit stepped out of the vehicle and walked straight toward my cruiser.
She opened the door, flashed a gleaming FBI badge, and unlocked my handcuffs with a small silver key.
"Clara, my name is Special Agent Miller, and we have been watching this property for the last six months," she explained.
She helped me out of the car and handed me a thick, warm blanket to drape over my trembling shoulders.
Agent Miller revealed that Martin Hale, my supposedly treacherous lawyer, was actually an undercover federal informant.
The text message he sent me about selling me out was a prearranged code to let me know the FBI was moving in.
"We needed Vanessa and Daniel to commit a major felony on camera to finally take down their entire criminal network," Miller stated.
The hidden cameras had recorded Daniel poisoning the wine, Vanessa confessing to murder, and the shootout with the cartel hitman.
The evidence was absolutely flawless, ironclad, and totally inadmissible in any local corrupt court.
The local Chief of Police came stomping down the driveway, his face flushed with pure, unadulterated rage.
"You can't just take my prime suspect, this is my jurisdiction!" the Chief yelled at the federal agent.
Agent Miller calmly handed the screaming man a thick stack of federal arrest warrants.
"Actually, Chief, we are taking over the entire investigation, and you are currently under arrest for accepting cartel bribes," Miller replied smoothly.
The Chief froze, the color draining entirely from his angry face.
Two federal agents stepped out of the shadows and swiftly placed the corrupt police chief in heavy handcuffs.
I watched the man who had threatened me with life in prison get shoved into the back of a federal transport van.
Agent Miller turned back to me and offered a warm, genuine smile of profound respect.
"Vanessa is currently under federal guard at the hospital, and she will be transferred to a maximum-security black site tomorrow," Miller promised.
The nightmare was officially over, and the people who tried to destroy me were going away forever.
I looked up at the massive cedar lake house, knowing it was finally, truly mine.

"You can go back inside and get some rest now, Clara," Agent Miller said softly.
But as I walked up the wooden steps, I noticed that the front door was completely covered in a strange, thick black symbol.
