Chapter 1 - The Secret Clause

The sterile smell of the hospital room made my stomach turn.
My left arm throbbed in rhythm with the steady beep of the heart monitor.
Martin Hale stood by the window, his eyes filled with a mixture of pity and quiet resolve.
I looked down at the sealed envelope he had just placed on my lap.
My father had always been a brilliant man, but I never realized he possessed the foresight to predict this exact nightmare.
"Are you absolutely certain you want to play their game?" Martin asked softly.
I gently touched the thick medical tape covering my split lip and nodded.
"If I expose them now, they will only get a minor assault charge and a slap on the wrist," I replied.
"I want them to lose everything they have ever cared about."
Martin sighed, buttoning his suit jacket as he prepared to leave.
"The forfeiture clause is ironclad, but you are playing with dangerous people, Clara."
"I survived Daniel's hands around my throat once, and I will not give him the chance to do it again," I assured him.
The heavy wooden door to my room suddenly swung open without a knock.
Vanessa walked in wearing a perfectly pressed designer dress, clutching a tissue to her dry eyes.
Daniel followed closely behind her, trying to mask his aggressive posture with a fake, apologetic smile.
"Oh, Clara, we were so worried when the doctor said you hadn't woken up yet," Vanessa lied smoothly.
I looked at my sister, marveling at how easily she could pretend I hadn't nearly died on her living room floor.
"I told the police it was a terrible misunderstanding, just a horrible accident," Daniel added quickly.
He stepped closer to the bed, his eyes darting toward the envelope resting on my blanket.
"I've had a lot of time to think while lying in this bed," I said, keeping my voice weak and defeated.
"You were right, Vanessa, the lake house belongs with you and Daniel."
Vanessa's eyes lit up with a greedy, uncontrollable excitement.
"I will sign the deed over to you as soon as I am discharged tomorrow," I promised.
Daniel let out a breath he had been holding, his fake smile turning into a genuine smirk of victory.
They offered a few more empty apologies before practically skipping out of the hospital room to celebrate.
Once the door clicked shut, I opened the envelope and plugged my father's encrypted flash drive into my phone.
I expected to find legal documents or financial records, but instead, a hidden video file appeared on the screen.

I pressed play and watched a black-and-white security recording of my father's home office from the night he died.
My blood ran cold as I watched Daniel slip a lethal dose of crushed pills into my father's evening tea.
