Chapter 4 - The Disappearing Ink

I looked up into Marcus's cold, predatory eyes and forced myself to smile.

"I don't mind signing the deed, Marcus, I just want to make sure the ink is permanent," I replied calmly.

I reached into my sweater pocket and pulled out a sleek, silver fountain pen my father had given me years ago.

It wasn't an ordinary pen.

My father was a paranoid collector of vintage espionage gadgets, and this pen was filled with advanced disappearing ink.

Any signature written with it would completely vanish into thin air within exactly two hours.

I clicked the cap off and quickly signed my full legal name on every single page of the property transfer.

Marcus watched me closely, completely unaware of the chemical trick I was pulling right in front of his eyes.

Daniel walked back into the living room, holding a glass of ice water, and saw the completed signatures.

"Excellent, finally this whole ridiculous nightmare is over," Daniel sneered, snatching the papers from the table.

He handed a thick white envelope full of cash to Marcus, who slipped it into his jacket without counting it.

"A pleasure doing business with you, Daniel," Marcus grunted before picking up his briefcase.

Marcus walked out the front door, leaving me alone with my sister and her murderous husband.

Vanessa walked back in from the patio, clapping her hands together in absolute delight.

"We should celebrate tonight, I will make my famous roasted chicken and pour some expensive wine!" she cheered.

I politely declined, claiming that my shoulder was hurting too much and I just wanted to sleep.

"Nonsense, Clara, you have to eat something, we insist," Daniel said, stepping directly into my path.

His eyes told me that attendance at this family dinner was not optional.

I went back upstairs to my room and pulled out my own cell phone to call Martin Hale.

I typed out a rapid text message, telling him the deed was signed but would erase itself by six o'clock.

I asked him to contact the local authorities and bring them to the lake house immediately.

My phone vibrated a few seconds later with a terrifying reply from Martin.

The message read, "I'm sorry Clara, but Daniel made me an offer I simply couldn't refuse."
