Chapter 9 - The Confession

The heavy steel doors of the police cruiser slammed shut, cutting off Julian's frantic laughter.

I sat on the bumper of an ambulance, wrapped in a thick wool blanket with Sophia and Eli.

The paramedics checked the children for injuries, but thankfully, they were only frightened and cold.

Nathaniel stood a few feet away, speaking quietly with the lead detective of the federal task force.

He handed over the metal lockbox containing all the evidence needed to put Julian away for multiple lifetimes.

The police had already sent a bomb squad into the warehouse, only to discover that Julian was bluffing.

There were no explosives rigged in the building at all.

It was just a desperate, pathetic final attempt to maintain control over his brother.

Nathaniel walked over to the ambulance and sat down next to me on the metal bumper.

He looked exhausted, his expensive suit wrinkled and damp from the pouring rain.

"They are transferring him to a federal holding facility right now," Nathaniel said quietly.

He gently reached out and brushed a wet strand of hair away from Eli's sleeping face.

"Is it true what he said about someone else being in the car?" I asked cautiously.

Nathaniel shook his head and let out a long, heavy sigh.

"The police reviewed the crash report and the original crime scene photos," he explained.

"There was no one else in the vehicle, Julian was just trying to plant one last seed of doubt in my mind to torture me."

I reached out and placed my hand gently over Nathaniel's cold fingers.

He did not pull away from my touch, instead lacing his fingers slowly through mine.

We sat there in silence for a long time, watching the flashing red and blue lights paint the wet pavement.

The crushing weight of the past two years finally seemed to lift from Nathaniel's shoulders.

The truth had been dragged into the light, and Evelyn's murder was finally going to be avenged.

We gathered the sleeping children into our arms and walked toward the waiting SUV to finally go home.

Tomorrow was going to be the first day of an entirely new life for all of us.

Before I opened the car door, Nathaniel stopped me and looked deeply into my eyes.

"I could never have survived tonight without you, Clara," he whispered softly in the rain.
