Chapter 7 - The Ambush

Julian froze completely as the red laser sight settled perfectly between his eyes.
"Drop the weapon right now, Julian," a deep and unfamiliar voice commanded from the shadows above.
I looked up and saw the silhouette of a man holding a high-powered tactical rifle.
Julian's confident smirk vanished, replaced by a mask of absolute panic and confusion.
"Who the hell is that?" Julian screamed, taking a desperate step backward.
Nathaniel did not answer him, but a dangerous smile slowly spread across his face.
"Did you really think I built a billion-dollar empire without making friends in the intelligence community?" Nathaniel asked softly.
The man on the catwalk was the head of Nathaniel's private corporate security team.
He was a former military sniper whom Nathaniel had secretly texted while I was trapped in the nursery.
"Put the gun on the floor and kick it away, or my friend will put a bullet through your skull before you can blink," Nathaniel ordered.
Julian's hand shook violently as he realized he was completely outmatched.
He slowly lowered his weapon and placed it on the damp concrete floor.
With a frustrated grunt, he kicked the pistol away toward a stack of wooden pallets.
"Now step away from the children," Nathaniel commanded with absolute authority.
Julian raised his hands in surrender and slowly backed away from the mattress where Sophia and Eli were crying.
I sprinted past Nathaniel, dropping to my knees beside the children.
I used a broken piece of glass from the floor to frantically slice through their thick nylon restraints.
I scooped Sophia and Eli into my arms, hugging them so tightly I thought I might never let go.
"It is over, mommy is here," I whispered into Sophia's hair as she sobbed against my shoulder.
Nathaniel walked over to where Julian was standing and picked up the dropped lockbox.
"The police are waiting outside the warehouse doors right now," Nathaniel told his brother.
Suddenly, Julian burst into a fit of maniacal laughter that echoed through the empty building.
"You really think you are the smartest man in the room, do you not?" Julian sneered.
He slowly reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a small black remote control.

"I rigged this entire warehouse with enough military-grade explosives to level a city block," Julian revealed.
He placed his thumb aggressively over the bright red detonator button.
