Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Six months later, the dark and heavy atmosphere of the Reed estate was completely gone.
Julian had pleaded guilty to treason and murder, accepting a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
The forbidden ballroom was no longer locked away in the dark.
Instead, it was filled with warm sunlight, vibrant flowers, and the joyous sound of children laughing.
Sophia and Eli were currently chasing each other around the grand piano, completely inseparable.
Nathaniel stood beside me, wrapping his arm warmly around my waist as we watched them play.
Over the past few months, our shared trauma had blossomed into a beautiful, quiet romance.
We had built a new family from the shattered pieces of our old lives, and I had never been happier.
Nathaniel kissed the top of my head and told me he was going to take the kids out for ice cream.
I smiled and agreed, telling him I would join them after I finished sorting through the last charity donations.
I walked up to the master bedroom to pack away some old winter coats for the local shelter.
At the bottom of the cedar chest, wrapped in a thick velvet cloth, I found a beautiful mahogany jewelry box.
I recognized it as one of Evelyn's personal keepsakes that Nathaniel had asked me to put away.
The box accidentally slipped from my fingers and hit the hardwood floor, causing the secret bottom panel to pop open.
Inside the hidden compartment was a single, pristine white envelope.
My heart skipped a violent beat when I read the elegant handwriting on the front of the paper.
The envelope was explicitly addressed to Clara Delgado, but I had not started working here until six months after Evelyn died.
I tore the envelope open with shaking hands and unfolded the letter inside.

The date written at the top of the page was exactly three days after Evelyn's official funeral.
The first sentence simply read, "Dear Clara, if you are reading this, my plan worked, and Nathaniel believes I am dead."
