Chapter 9 - The Broadcast

The brutal impact shattered the windshield of the tactical truck, raining safety glass over the dashboard.
Arthur Vance aimed his automatic rifle and fired a deafening burst directly into the satellite laptop.
The screen exploded into a shower of sparks and black plastic, completely destroying the computer terminal.
Arthur lowered his smoking weapon and smiled a deeply arrogant, victorious smile.
He confidently declared that he had destroyed the only remaining copy of the evidence against his empire.
I looked at the shattered remains of the laptop and let out a long, exhausted sigh of genuine relief.
I looked up at Arthur and smiled back at him for the very first time.
I told him that he was exactly three seconds too late to stop the digital upload.
The progress bar had hit one hundred percent just before the bullets destroyed the hard drive.
The video of him laundering cartel money while his sons beat my daughter was now in the hands of the national press.
Arthur’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer, unfiltered terror and panic.
He raised his rifle to execute me in a fit of absolute rage, but his hands were shaking violently.
Before he could pull the trigger, the dark forest was suddenly illuminated by dozens of blinding spotlights.
Five federal helicopters descended from the sky, their heavy rotors kicking up a massive storm of dirt and debris.
These were not the corrupt local agents Arthur had paid off, but an elite federal task force from Washington.
The national news broadcast had triggered an immediate, uncontrollable federal response that Arthur could not stop.
Dozens of heavily armored tactical agents swarmed the clearing with laser-sighted rifles aimed directly at Arthur.
A loud megaphone commanded him to drop his weapon and surrender immediately to federal authorities.
Arthur looked around wildly, realizing his money and power meant absolutely nothing in this moment.
He dropped the rifle into the mud and fell to his knees in utter, humiliating defeat.
Federal agents aggressively placed him in heavy steel handcuffs and dragged him toward a waiting transport vehicle.
Other agents quickly secured Ethan from the mud and arrested him for attempted murder and arson.
A federal medic rushed to our shattered truck and gently helped me carry Maya to a waiting medical helicopter.
I held my daughter's good hand as the helicopter lifted off, leaving the burning cabin and the ruined Vance empire far behind.
The medic bandaged my bleeding shoulder and assured me that Maya was finally completely safe.
I looked out the window of the helicopter and saw the Vance family estate swarming with federal raid teams.
Veronica was being escorted out of the mansion in handcuffs, screaming at the news cameras flashing in her face.
The untouchable dynasty had finally completely collapsed under the weight of their own arrogant sins.

I kissed Maya's forehead and whispered that we were finally going home for good.
She looked up at me with tired, peaceful eyes and asked if she ever had to see her mother again.
