Chapter 8 - The Inferno

The glass bottle shattered, instantly igniting the dry wooden floorboards in a massive wall of roaring fire.
Ethan Vance laughed like a complete maniac as the flames rapidly spread toward Maya’s mattress.
He pulled a long hunting knife from his belt and stepped confidently into the burning cabin.
I drew Chief Miller’s stolen revolver from my waistband and pulled the heavy trigger without hesitation.
The gun simply clicked, revealing that the corrupt police chief had failed to reload his weapon properly.
I threw the useless gun directly at Ethan’s face to distract him for a single, precious second.
I charged through the flames, ignoring the intense heat blistering my arms and face.
I tackled Ethan backward through the open doorway, sending us both tumbling out into the freezing mud.
He slashed wildly with his knife, tearing a deep, agonizing gash across my left shoulder.
I gritted my teeth against the searing pain and pinned his knife hand firmly against the frozen ground.
I delivered a brutal, crushing headbutt directly to his face, breaking his nose with a sickening crunch.
Ethan went completely limp in the mud, finally incapacitated after the vicious, bloody struggle.
I scrambled back into the cabin, which was now fully engulfed in towering, deadly flames.
Thick black smoke choked the air, making it nearly impossible to see or breathe.
I found Maya coughing weakly on the mattress, entirely surrounded by the rapidly encroaching fire.
I scooped her up and wrapped the wool blanket tightly around her head to protect her lungs from the smoke.
I blindly charged back through the wall of fire, bursting out of the cabin just as the roof began to collapse.
We collapsed together in the cold mud, gasping desperately for fresh, clean oxygen.
I checked Maya's bandages and was endlessly relieved to find that the fire had not burned her.
I realized that Ethan finding us meant the rest of the Vance family was likely closing in quickly.
I needed to get the video footage to the authorities before Arthur's men completely surrounded the forest.
I noticed Ethan’s heavily modified tactical truck parked silently in the tree line a few yards away.
I carried Maya to the truck, placed her safely in the passenger seat, and secured her seatbelt.
I climbed into the driver's seat and found a high-powered military satellite laptop mounted to the dashboard.
Ethan had used it to track my movements, but it was actively connected to a global cellular network.
I jammed the flash drive into the laptop's USB port and rapidly began uploading the video file.
I bypassed the local news stations entirely and sent the footage directly to every major national news outlet in the country.
The upload progress bar slowly ticked toward one hundred percent as I prayed for a miracle.

Suddenly, a massive armored vehicle smashed head-on into the front of our truck with terrifying force.
Arthur Vance stepped out of the armored vehicle, holding an automatic rifle aimed perfectly at the laptop screen.
