Chapter 20 - The dawn of peace
The brutal firefight lasted less than five minutes. Victor’s mercenaries, realizing their entire criminal empire had just been permanently dismantled, immediately dropped their weapons and surrendered to the overwhelming federal force. I knelt on the cold pavement, pressing my hands desperately against Julian’s bleeding chest. "Stay with us, Julian, please stay," I cried, hot tears streaming down my dirt-covered face. He looked up at me, managing a weak, genuine smile. "I finally protected my little sister," he whispered before completely losing consciousness. Paramedics rushed forward, aggressively pushing me aside to load Julian onto a stretcher. The FBI commander from the airfield approached us, stepping over the handcuffed, defeated form of Victor Sterling. "We have him, Rowan," the commander said gently, wrapping a thick blanket around my trembling shoulders. "The files you sent are enough to put him away in a dark hole for ten lifetimes. You and Lila are finally free."
Six months later, the bright summer sun shined warmly over our completely rebuilt countryside estate. Julian, walking with a slight limp but fully recovered from his terrifying injuries, sat on the porch drinking sweet tea. He had officially retired from practicing law, choosing instead to help me manage Arthur’s massive charitable foundation. Lila was laughing brightly in the yard, throwing a tennis ball for a golden retriever puppy we had adopted the previous week. I stood at the kitchen window, watching my beautiful, incredibly brave daughter living the normal, happy life she had always deserved. Eleanor was securely locked in federal prison forever, and Victor was currently standing trial for international war crimes, completely stripped of his wealth and his power. The shadows that had relentlessly hunted us were finally, permanently extinguished. I walked out onto the porch, breathing in the fresh, clean air, knowing that for the first time in my entire life, we were completely safe.
