Chapter 11 - The lingering shadows

I stood entirely frozen in the center of Arthur’s old study, the heavy oil painting still hanging awkwardly off its brass hinges. The cold steel of the hidden wall safe seemed to mock me, its dark interior holding the single manila folder that had just completely shattered my fragile reality. I read the terrifying handwritten note taped to the back of Lila’s photograph over and over again until the words began to blur through my tears. "They are still hunting for the girl, and the money will not protect her when they arrive." My hands trembled so violently that I dropped the photograph onto the hardwood floor. Someone had been watching us. Someone had taken this picture of my fourteen-year-old daughter just days ago, right here in our supposed rural sanctuary. I grabbed the birth certificate from the folder, frantically scanning the faded ink for any clue as to who my biological parents actually were. The space for the mother was left entirely blank, but the father’s name was stamped in bold, uncompromising black letters: Victor Sterling.

My breath caught painfully in my throat. Sterling. It was the exact same last name as the brilliant, sharp-suited attorney who had supposedly rescued us from Eleanor’s wicked grasp. Julian Sterling had claimed to be Arthur Vance’s personal lawyer, but was it just a terrifying coincidence? I snatched my cell phone from my back pocket and immediately dialed Julian’s private number. It rang three times before his smooth, calm voice echoed through the speaker. "Rowan, is everything alright? It is quite late," he answered. I forced my voice to remain steady, masking the absolute panic tearing through my chest. "Julian, I need you to come to the estate immediately. I found something in Arthur’s study," I demanded. There was a long, chilling pause on the other end of the line. "I will be there in twenty minutes," he finally replied, hanging up before I could say another word. I locked the heavy wooden door of the study and ran upstairs to Lila’s bedroom. She was sleeping peacefully, her chest rising and falling beneath her thick quilt. I sat on the edge of her bed, quietly loading the heavy steel flare gun Julian had left with us after the nightmare at the airfield. We were supposed to be safe now. We had survived Eleanor, the corrupt police, and the burning wreckage of the jet. But looking down at my sweet, innocent daughter, I realized the horrifying truth. The nightmare was not over; it was just evolving into something much worse.
