Chapter 10 - The hidden truth

"Drop the weapon immediately!" the commander screamed, but Eleanor just offered a final, wicked smile. Before she could pull the trigger, a sharp-shooting federal sniper fired a single rubber bullet. The non-lethal round struck Eleanor hard in the shoulder, knocking the gun from her hand and sending her collapsing onto the wet concrete. Officers immediately swarmed her, pinning her down and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists. The nightmare was finally, truly over. A few weeks later, all the ridiculous charges against me were officially dropped by a federal judge. Eleanor and her corrupt detective were both sentenced to life in a maximum-security federal prison for the murder of Arthur Vance. Lila and I inherited Arthur's massive estate, moving far away from our tiny, broken house. We bought a beautiful, sprawling home in the countryside with a kitchen large enough to bake a hundred pies. We even used a massive portion of the money to build a brand new, state-of-the-art wing for the St. Jude Senior Living Center. Lila was safe, smiling, and finally living the bright, beautiful life she had always deserved. We spent our evenings laughing on the porch, surrounded by peace and unconditional love. But exactly one month after we moved in, I decided to organize the boxes from Arthur's old study. While dusting the bookshelf, I found a hidden wall safe concealed entirely behind a heavy oil painting. Inside the cold steel box was a single manila folder containing a birth certificate that proved I was actually adopted. Clipped to the document was a recent photograph of Lila walking to school, circled in dark red ink. A terrifying handwritten note was taped to the back of the photo, chilling my blood instantly. "They are still hunting for the girl, and the money will not protect her when they arrive."
