Chapter 3 - The Bloody Escape

Elias stared endlessly at the fresh ink on the fragile page.

His blood turned to pure ice inside his veins.

He slowly looked up from the diary to observe his brother.

David was standing entirely too still near the marble kitchen island.

His right hand was slowly inching toward the dropped butcher knife on the floor.

“What does the diary say, Elias?” David asked.

His voice was completely devoid of its former nervous emotion.

Elias violently slammed the book shut and grabbed Lily’s tiny hand.

“We are leaving right now.”

“You absolutely cannot take her out of this house,” David warned coldly.

“Watch me.”

Elias pulled the frightened child forcefully toward the front door.

David lunged forward across the room with surprising, lethal speed.

Elias sidestepped the attack and drove his elbow directly into his brother’s jaw.

David crashed heavily into the wall, shattering a framed family photograph.

“Run to the car, Lily!” Elias shouted at the top of his lungs.

They burst out of the blue door into the freezing, dark evening air.

Elias dragged her toward his parked sedan sitting halfway down the street.

He fumbled aggressively with his car keys, his hands shaking violently with adrenaline.

He threw Lily into the passenger seat and instantly locked all the doors.

The engine roared to life just as David stumbled out onto the front porch.

David did not attempt to chase the moving car.

He simply stood calmly on the porch, pulled out a black encrypted satellite phone, and made a single call.

Elias floored the gas pedal, tearing recklessly through the quiet suburban streets.

His mind was spinning entirely out of control as he drove in the dark.

If Anna was truly alive, why had she hidden from him for seven long years?

Why was his treacherous brother raising their beautiful daughter?

“Where are we going, Daddy?” Lily asked quietly from the passenger seat.

Hearing that specific word shattered Elias’s heart into a million painful pieces.

“We are going to find your mother.”

He nervously glanced up into the illuminated rearview mirror.

A massive, armored black SUV had turned onto the main avenue right behind them.

Its headlights were turned completely off, but it was matching his speed perfectly.

Elias took a sharp right turn down a narrow, trash-filled alleyway.

The aggressive SUV relentlessly followed, heavily accelerating to ram their rear bumper.

Elias aggressively swerved onto the busy main highway, desperately dodging oncoming traffic.

Lily screamed in pure terror as a high-caliber bullet shattered the back window of their car.
