Chapter 8 - The Tunnel Escape

Ivan stood blocking our only path to freedom, a cruel and predatory smile plastered across his face.
"You really thought you could just slip away into the night, Julian?" Ivan mocked.
I shoved Grace and Amara behind a large concrete pillar, instructing Carlo to protect them.
I dropped my empty assault rifle and pulled my own combat knife from its tactical sheath.
"This ends right here, Ivan," I stated coldly, stepping out into the pouring rain.
Ivan lunged at me with terrifying speed for a man of his massive size.
I dodged his initial slash, feeling the sharp blade slice through the fabric of my coat.
I countered with a swift strike to his ribs, burying my blade deep into his side.
Ivan roared in pain, dropping his knife and wrapping his massive hands entirely around my throat.
He lifted me off the wet wooden dock, completely cutting off my air supply.
Black spots began to dance in my vision as I struggled desperately to break his iron grip.
I used my last ounce of strength to reach into my boot and pull out a concealed tactical pen.
I drove the sharp metal point directly into Ivan's neck.
His eyes widened in shock, and he dropped me to the wooden planks, clutching his bleeding throat.
Ivan stumbled backward and fell off the edge of the pier, vanishing into the dark, freezing river.
I gasped for air, coughing violently as the rain washed the blood from my face.
Grace rushed over, wrapping her arms around me and helping me stand up.
We hurried toward the waiting motorboat, desperate to escape before the rest of the cartel arrived.

Just as I started the boat's powerful engine, a red laser dot suddenly appeared on Grace's chest.
I looked up toward the bridge above us and saw Seraphina aiming a high-powered sniper rifle directly at the woman who saved our child.
