Chapter 7 - The Siege

Concrete dust rained down on us as the heavy steel ceiling groaned under the massive explosions.

Ivan's men were determined to bury us alive if they could not breach the heavy doors.

I scooped Amara into my arms and grabbed Grace's hand tightly.

"We cannot stay here, the structural supports are failing," I yelled over the deafening noise.

Carlo rushed into the room, his face covered in gray soot and blood.

He opened a concealed heavy iron grate on the floor, revealing a dark, narrow drainage pipe.

"The old prohibition tunnels run straight to the river, Boss, you have to go now!" Carlo shouted.

I handed Amara to Grace and ordered them to climb down into the dark tunnel immediately.

I grabbed two heavy duffel bags filled with emergency cash, passports, and ammunition.

Just as I prepared to follow them into the tunnel, the main bunker door was blown completely off its hinges.

Smoke poured into the room, followed by a dozen heavily armed mercenaries.

I laid down a wall of suppressing fire with my assault rifle, buying Grace enough time to disappear into the darkness.

Carlo was hit in the shoulder, but he kept firing his weapon with relentless determination.

I threw a smoke grenade into the center of the room, blinding the mercenaries entirely.

I dragged Carlo toward the grate and shoved him down into the tunnel before jumping in after him.

I sealed the heavy iron grate from the inside and engaged the manual deadbolt.

We crawled frantically through the cold, knee-deep water of the ancient sewer system.

I could hear the muffled shouts of Ivan's men above us, desperately trying to pry the grate open.

We finally reached the end of the tunnel, emerging into the freezing rain near the edge of the river.

I breathed a sigh of relief as I saw a small motorboat waiting for us at the dock.

But when I looked up, Ivan Volkov was standing on the pier, holding a massive hunting knife.
