Chapter 2 - The Hospital Secret

The crystal chandelier above us seemed to flicker as her words hit me like a physical blow.

I stopped breathing for a fraction of a second.

"What did you just say?" I demanded, crouching down to her eye level.

Grace pulled Amara closer to her chest, her entire body shaking with fear.

"The body recovered from the fire was a Jane Doe from the city morgue," she explained rapidly.

She told me that the chief medical examiner had been bribed to falsify the dental records.

Grace had accidentally walked into the autopsy room and caught them switching the files.

"Dante held a gun to my head and told me I would die if I ever breathed a word," she cried.

I stood up and looked down at Dante, who was still pinned to the floor by my guards.

My fists clenched so tightly that my knuckles turned completely white.

I walked over to him and grabbed him violently by the collar of his shirt.

"Where is my daughter, Dante?" I roared, my voice shaking the glass windows.

Dante spat blood onto the floor and let out a dark, mocking laugh.

"You really think I orchestrated all of this by myself, Julian?" he sneered.

He told me that he was only following orders from someone much closer to me.

I pressed the barrel of my gun directly against his temple.

"Give me a name right now, or you will not leave this room alive," I threatened.

Dante smiled, revealing teeth stained with crimson blood.

"Ask your precious, grieving wife," he whispered maliciously.

My heart plummeted into my stomach.

My wife, Seraphina, had supposedly perished in the exact same fire that took my daughter.

I had buried two empty caskets simply because the police claimed there was nothing left to recover.

Before I could process this horrifying betrayal, a massive explosion shook the foundation of the mansion.

Dante had not come to dinner alone tonight.
