Chapter 1 - The Hidden Photograph

Robert stood in the grand foyer as Maria gently led little Sam up the sweeping marble staircase.

The silence of the massive house felt much heavier than usual.

Elizabeth turned her sleek wheelchair toward her husband with a deep, frustrated sigh.

She asked him what he was really thinking by bringing a random vagrant into their pristine home.

Robert loosened his expensive silk tie and admitted he did not exactly know.

He just felt an incredibly strange and powerful connection to the terrified child.

Elizabeth warned him that his bleeding heart would eventually get them into serious trouble.

She rolled her wheelchair away toward the west wing, leaving Robert entirely alone in the dim entryway.

He walked over to the antique mahogany table where Sam had cautiously left his threadbare backpack.

The cheap canvas material was stained with mud and smelled strongly of damp earth.

Robert gently unzipped the main compartment, hoping to find some sort of identification or a clue about the boy's family.

He reached inside the small pocket and pulled out a crumpled, water-damaged piece of paper.

Tucked carefully underneath the folded paper was an old, faded photograph.

Robert stared at the glossy image and instantly felt all the air completely leave his lungs.

The picture showed a young, beautiful woman smiling warmly at the camera while standing near a beach.

It was a face Robert had not seen in over a massive decade.

The woman in the photograph was his estranged younger sister, Clara.

Clara had supposedly died in a highly publicized, tragic boating accident exactly fifteen years ago.

The authorities had searched for weeks, but no body had ever been recovered from the deep ocean.

Robert flipped the photograph over with violently trembling hands.

There was a message written in frantic, hurried ink across the back of the photo.

The note explicitly stated that Robert Ellington owed someone a massive, unforgivable debt.

It chillingly demanded that Robert finally pay for his terrible past sins.

Robert realized with absolute horror that this poor boy was not just a random homeless child.

Sam was very likely his own flesh and blood nephew.

He wondered if Clara had somehow survived the accident and lived in absolute poverty all these years.

A sudden, sharp crashing sound from the kitchen violently interrupted his racing thoughts.

Before Robert could even turn around to investigate, the crystal chandeliers in the mansion suddenly flickered and died.

The entire sprawling estate was instantly plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness.

The heavy oak front doors were suddenly kicked open with a violent, terrifying crash.

Cold autumn wind howled into the grand foyer, blowing dead leaves across the expensive marble floor.

Three large men dressed entirely in black tactical gear stepped menacingly into the dark entryway.

The tallest man slowly racked the slide of a suppressed automatic pistol.

He pointed the weapon directly at Robert's chest.

He coldly ordered the millionaire to hand over the child immediately or die.
