Chapter 8 - The Desperate Stand

The mechanical whining of the heavy drill grew significantly louder and more aggressive by the second.
"The Russians know we are trapped down here, and they are actively digging us out to finish the job," Julian warned.
He checked the magazine of his pistol, realizing with a grimace that he only had exactly four bullets left.
"We are going to fight to the very last breath, Anaëlle," he said, handing her a spare, incredibly sharp combat knife.
She gripped the heavy blade tightly, her overwhelming grief instantly transforming into pure, unadulterated survival instinct.
The concrete wall cracked violently inward, and a massive sledgehammer smashed aggressively through the gray stone.
The jagged hole widened incredibly quickly, revealing the blinding, harsh glare of heavy construction lights.
Three heavily armed Russian mercenaries stepped completely through the breach with their automatic rifles raised high.
Julian fired three times with terrifying, absolute precision, dropping all three men in a matter of seconds.
He had exactly one single bullet left in the chamber of his smoking, overheated weapon.
"Move through the breach quickly, we are taking their escape route!" Julian commanded fiercely over the noise.
They climbed carefully through the jagged hole, stepping over the dead mercenaries into a newly dug, muddy service tunnel.
More angry shouts echoed loudly down the tunnel as Russian reinforcements heard the rapid, deadly gunshots.
Julian pushed Anaëlle safely behind a large generator unit, turning to face the approaching army with just one bullet.
"I will hold them off here, you run to the surface and disappear completely," he ordered her sternly.
"I am absolutely not leaving you behind to die alone!" she screamed, grabbing his uninjured arm tightly.
"You have to live to play that beautiful Chopin piece again," he smiled softly, offering a genuine, beautiful expression.
The heavily armed Russian boss, Igor, walked aggressively into the generator room surrounded by his lethal soldiers.
"It is completely over, Julian, just surrender the girl and the flash drive now," Igor demanded with a cruel, victorious laugh.
Julian raised his empty pistol boldly, preparing to die on his own violent, unwavering terms.
Suddenly, the entire tunnel was flooded with blinding, flashing red and blue police lights.
The sirens wailed deafeningly loud as a massive, heavily-armored SWAT team swarmed the underground tunnel completely.
Igor panicked entirely and raised his assault rifle, aiming directly at Anaëlle's chest in a fit of pure spite.

Julian threw himself fiercely in front of her just as the terrifying weapon discharged with a deafening roar.
Julian's strong body jerked violently as three heavy bullets tore through his back, and he collapsed heavily into her arms.
