Chapter 7 - The Cave-In

Huge chunks of concrete crashed heavily down, filling the bunker with blinding, choking gray dust.
Julian tackled Anaëlle hard to the solid ground, shielding her completely with his own massive body.
The deafening roar of the collapsing mansion directly above them seemed to last for an absolute eternity.
When the violent, terrifying shaking finally stopped, they were plunged into absolute, suffocating pitch blackness.
Anaëlle coughed desperately in the dark, trying to clear the thick, toxic dust from her burning lungs.
"Are you still alive down there?" Julian's deep, rumbling voice echoed right next to her ear.
"I think so," she whispered weakly, her hands trembling as she touched his broad, protective chest.
Julian pulled a small tactical flashlight from his utility belt and clicked it firmly on.
The narrow beam of light revealed a truly terrifying reality surrounding them in the small space.
The bunker entrance was completely blocked by tons of impassable, crushed stone and ruined rubble.
They were entirely trapped underground with a rapidly diminishing supply of breathable oxygen.
"Lucas!" Anaëlle called out frantically, shining the light desperately around the confined, ruined space.
They found her brother pinned brutally underneath a massive steel support beam near the back wall.
He was actively breathing, but his legs were hopelessly crushed by the immense, immovable weight of the steel.
"I am sorry, Anaëlle, I am so incredibly sorry for everything," Lucas wept weakly in the dark.
Julian inspected the heavy beam carefully, his face turning grim and completely, utterly hopeless.
"We cannot possibly move this without heavy machinery, he is entirely stuck," Julian declared clinically.
Anaëlle sat gently beside her dying brother, holding his cold, trembling hand as tears fell freely.
"You have to survive this, Anaëlle, do not let me die down here for absolutely nothing," Lucas choked out.
He reached painfully into his jacket pocket and handed Julian a bloody, highly encrypted USB drive.
"This drive contains all of the Russian syndicate's offshore bank accounts and hidden safehouses," Lucas confessed quietly.
Julian took the drive smoothly, a look of genuine, profound surprise crossing his hardened features.
"You actually stole from them while you were actively betraying me?" Julian asked with a dark, amused chuckle.
"I desperately wanted to buy my sister's total freedom from everyone," Lucas whispered, closing his eyes slowly.
His chest stopped moving entirely, and the ruined bunker fell into a heavy, agonizing, absolute silence.
Anaëlle buried her face in her hands, weeping loudly for the broken family she had just permanently lost.

Julian knelt closely beside her, wrapping his strong, uninjured arm warmly around her trembling shoulders.
Suddenly, they heard the distinct, terrifying sound of heavy industrial drilling coming from the solid wall behind them.
