Chapter 1 - The Shattered Portrait

The screaming in the parlor had reached a fever pitch.
Aunt Martha slammed her fist on the mahogany table, demanding a much larger share of the sprawling estate.
Uncle Richard loosened his expensive silk tie, his face completely red with pure, unadulterated greed.
None of these adults seemed to care that Grandpa Henry had supposedly passed away just forty-eight hours ago in a tragic car accident.
They only cared about the millions of dollars left behind in his secretive offshore accounts.
Eleven-year-old Leo sat quietly in the corner of the room, clutching a heavy brass candlestick in his small hands.
He was the only one in the entire house who noticed the faint, rhythmic clicking sound echoing through the thick walls.
It was a very specific Morse code pattern his grandfather had taught him during their summer camping trips up in the mountains.
The invisible signal was clear and desperate, repeating the word for help over and over again.
Leo stood up from his chair, his eyes locking onto the massive, ancient family portrait hanging proudly above the marble fireplace.
He realized the clicking noise was coming from directly behind the painted canvas of his ancestors.
"We should liquidate all the tech shares immediately before the market opens tomorrow," Richard argued loudly, completely ignoring the young boy.
Leo gripped the cold brass candlestick tighter and walked slowly toward the towering fireplace.
He climbed onto the elevated stone hearth, his heart hammering violently against his ribs as the clicking grew louder.
Without a single word of warning to the arguing adults, Leo swung the heavy brass object directly into the center of the priceless painting.
The old canvas ripped with a loud, satisfying tear, silencing the bickering family members instantly.
"What on earth are you doing, you ungrateful little brat!" Aunt Martha shrieked in absolute horror.
Leo ignored her entirely, tearing the rest of the ruined canvas away from its wooden frame with his bare hands.
Hidden safely behind the destroyed portrait was a sleek, modern keypad and a small, brightly glowing security monitor.
On the digital screen was a live video feed originating from a dark, cramped underground bunker.
Grandpa Henry was sitting in front of the camera, looking bruised and exhausted but very much alive.

The greedy adults in the room gasped loudly, their faces twisting in collective horror rather than relief at seeing their father alive.
Before anyone could take another breath, the heavy oak doors of the parlor violently slammed shut and locked themselves from the outside.
