Chapter 2 - The New Nurse

I woke up to the smell of gasoline and damp earth.

I was no longer lying on the blistering front lawn.

Someone had dragged me into the suffocating darkness of our backyard storage shed.

My chest throbbed with a relentless, burning rhythm that made my vision blur.

I slowly opened my eyes and saw a woman standing over me.

She was young, beautifully dressed in a white linen sundress, and she was holding a glass of iced tea.

"Oh, good, you're finally awake," she said, taking a casual sip from her glass.

"Who are you?" I gasped, clutching my chest as a fresh wave of agony washed over me.

"I'm Sarah," she replied with a perfectly practiced smile.

"Garrick hired me to be your private in-home nurse."

I stared at her, my mind struggling to process the blatant lie.

Nurses wore scrubs, carried medical equipment, and actually helped their patients.

Sarah was wearing Garrick's favorite silver necklace, the one I had bought him for our anniversary.

"You aren't a nurse," I whispered, my throat entirely parched.

She laughed softly and knelt down beside me on the dirty wooden floor.

"No, I'm not, but Miriam thinks I am."

"She thinks Garrick brought me here from the church to pray over you and monitor your fever."

Sarah reached out and aggressively poked the center of my bruised chest, right over my incisions.

I screamed in pain and recoiled against the wall of the shed.

"Garrick and I have been waiting for this surgery for eight months, Elena."

"He told me that double mastectomies carry a very high risk of fatal postoperative infections."

She stood back up and looked down at me with absolute disgust.

"Especially when the patient refuses to clean her wounds and decides to sleep in a filthy shed."

The terrifying reality of my situation finally clicked into place.

Garrick hadn't just thrown away my antibiotics and bandages out of cruelty.

He was actively trying to murder me through medical neglect.

He wanted me to die of sepsis so he could play the tragic, grieving widower at his church.

I tried to push myself up, but my arms completely gave out.

"Don't bother fighting it," Sarah said, turning toward the door.

"I locked the shed from the outside, and Garrick turned off the security cameras."

She stepped out into the bright sunlight and pulled the heavy wooden door shut.

The padlock clicked loudly into place.

I was trapped in a baking wooden box with bleeding wounds and zero ventilation.

Then, my burner phone vibrated weakly inside my pocket.

I pulled it out with trembling fingers and read a single text message from an unknown number.

The message said, "Look under the floorboards directly beneath the lawnmower."
