Chapter 9 - The Impossible Letter

I stared at the pristine white envelope, my hands shaking so badly I nearly dropped it.
The ink was perfectly dark, not faded by years of sitting in a dark vault.
It looked as though it had been written and placed inside the box only hours ago.
I carefully broke the red wax seal on the back and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper.
The scent of my father's signature cedarwood cologne drifted faintly from the paper.
I forced my eyes to focus on the elegant cursive writing.
"My dearest Maya," the letter began.
"If you are reading this, it means you have finally defeated Julian in court."
I gasped loudly in the empty room, dropping the letter onto the mahogany table.
How could my dead father possibly know Julian's name?
I hadn't even met Julian until two full years after my father's funeral.
I pressed my trembling hands against the table to steady myself and forced myself to keep reading.
"I knew he would underestimate you, my brilliant girl."
"Julian was always too arrogant and far too sloppy to handle a true Hayes."
"You inherited my ruthless nature, and I have never been more proud of you than I am today."
Tears blurred my vision as my mind frantically tried to reject reality.
This was a sick joke, a final psychological game played by Julian before he went to prison.
But Julian did not have access to this vault, and he could never perfectly forge this handwriting.
"I am sure you are wondering why the trust funds are entirely missing from this box," the letter continued.
"The truth is, Maya, the trust was never real."
"It was a carefully constructed mirage, designed specifically to test your business instincts and your loyalty."
I felt the room begin to spin violently.
My father had built his entire legacy on absolute control, and even in death, he was still pulling the strings.
"I needed to know if you were strong enough to protect the family empire from outside threats."
"You proved your worth by destroying your pathetic husband, your greedy mother, and your foolish sister."
"They were weak, and weakness cannot be tolerated in our business."
I grabbed the edge of the table, struggling to draw a full breath.
The letter was not a confession from a ghost.
It was a terrifying set of instructions from a mastermind.
I read the final paragraph, and my blood turned completely to ice.
"Now that you have passed the ultimate test, it is time for us to finally reunite."
