Chapter 2 - The Co-Conspirators

Elias walked slowly across the courtroom floor, carrying the second packet like a loaded weapon.

The sound of his polished shoes echoed against the hardwood.

He handed the new documents to the bailiff, who promptly delivered them to the judge.

I sat perfectly still, my hands folded neatly on the table in front of me.

I did not look at my mother or my sister yet.

I wanted them to feel the slow, agonizing burn of anticipation.

Judge Mercer broke the seal on the second packet and began to read.

Her eyebrows raised slightly, which was the closest she ever came to showing shock.

"Mr. Whitmore, am I reading this correctly?" the judge asked, looking over her glasses.

"Yes, Your Honor," Elias replied smoothly.

"The documents prove that Attorney Julian did not act alone in his attempt to defraud my client."

Elias turned slowly to face the gallery, his eyes landing directly on my family.

"He was actively assisted by Brenda and Jasmine Hayes."

My mother shot up from her seat as if she had been physically struck.

"That is a vicious lie!" my mother screamed, abandoning her elegant persona entirely.

"I am her mother, I would never do such a thing!"

Judge Mercer slammed her wooden gavel down with a sharp, explosive crack.

"Sit down and remain silent, ma'am, or my bailiff will remove you in handcuffs," the judge warned.

My mother sank slowly back onto the wooden bench, her face pale and trembling.

Elias turned his attention back to the judge.

"Page three outlines a series of wire transfers from Julian's offshore account directly to a boutique real estate firm."

"That firm is entirely owned by Jasmine Hayes."

My sister froze, her smug expression melting into absolute horror.

"The money stolen from my client's company was used to purchase three luxury condos under Jasmine's name," Elias continued.

Trent, my sister's husband, slowly turned his head to stare at his wife.

"Jasmine, what the hell is he talking about?" Trent muttered in disbelief.

Jasmine could not even look at her own husband.

She was staring directly at Julian, pleading with him silently to fix this disaster.

But Julian was entirely broken, staring blankly at the polished table.

"Furthermore, Your Honor," Elias added, his voice dropping an octave.

"We have sworn affidavits proving that Brenda Hayes knowingly signed away my client's childhood home as collateral to secure a private loan for Julian."

The courtroom erupted into a frenzy of shocked whispers.

My mother had literally bet the roof over her head on Julian's ability to destroy me.

Julian’s attorney quickly stood up, desperately trying to salvage the situation.

"Your Honor, we request an immediate recess to review these sudden allegations," Sterling pleaded.

I leaned closer to my microphone and spoke for the first time.

May you like

"No recess," I said clearly.

"Because we are about to play the audio recording."
