Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The sound of the handcuffs locking was the sweetest music I had ever heard.

Julian was physically dragged away from the petitioner's table, kicking and swearing like a violent child.

His polished navy suit became wrinkled and ruined in the struggle.

"Maya, please!" he suddenly begged, his anger entirely replaced by sheer terror as they pulled him toward the side door.

"Don't let them put me in a cell, I'll give you everything back!"

I did not even blink as the heavy wooden door slammed shut behind him, cutting off his pathetic cries.

Judge Mercer banged her gavel one final time to silence the chaotic whispers of the remaining gallery.

"This hearing is officially concluded," she declared sharply.

"Mr. Whitmore, please forward all your evidence to the District Attorney's fraud division by this afternoon."

"With pleasure, Your Honor," Elias smiled warmly.

The judge stood up, her black robes flowing, and exited the courtroom through her private chambers.

I took a deep, shuddering breath, feeling the crushing weight of the last three years finally lift from my chest.

I had done it.

I had protected my company, saved my father's legacy, and destroyed the parasites feeding on my life.

I turned around to face the gallery, where my mother and sister were still sitting in stunned silence.

Trent had already slipped out the back doors, leaving Jasmine completely abandoned.

My mother slowly stood up, her face pale, and tried to muster her usual authoritative glare.

"You have destroyed your own family today, Maya," Brenda hissed venomously.

"I hope you are happy ruling over your empty, lonely little kingdom."

I picked up my briefcase and walked slowly down the aisle until I stood directly in front of her.

"You sold my childhood home to fund my husband's affair," I reminded her softly.

"You are not my family, Brenda."

"You are just a bad investment I finally decided to cut loose."

Jasmine burst into angry tears, clutching her expensive designer purse.

"Where are we supposed to go?" Jasmine cried. "Trent took all the money from our joint accounts!"

I leaned in close to my sister, smelling her expensive, sickeningly sweet perfume.

"I hear the local homeless shelter has a lovely view of the skyline," I whispered.

I turned my back on them and walked proudly out of the double doors of the courtroom.

The bright sunlight of the Atlanta afternoon hit my face as I stepped out of the courthouse.

Elias walked beside me, carrying the files that had just won the greatest battle of my life.

"You executed that perfectly, Maya," Elias congratulated me, patting my shoulder.

"Take the rest of the week off. The immediate threat is completely neutralized."

I smiled genuinely for the first time in months.

I was finally free, wealthy, and completely untouchable.

Or so I thought.
