Chapter 3 - The Vault

The air in the headmaster's office suddenly felt too thin to breathe.
She stared at Marcus Thorne, her mind racing to process the catastrophic shift in power.
Her family's estate was their last remaining asset, the only thing keeping them from total destitution.
And now, the boy she had planned to destroy held the keys to her front door.
"I see you two have already met," Marcus said with a polite but terrifying smile.
Asher tossed the core of his apple into the ornate trash can.
"We had a brief chat this morning," Asher noted casually.
The headmaster quickly dismissed Chloe, citing a private meeting.
She stumbled out into the hallway, her perfectly manicured life crumbling into dust.
She needed a plan.
She needed to find out why a billionaire like Marcus Thorne would adopt a boy who rode a rusted motorcycle.
That evening, Chloe skipped the elite equestrian club meeting and broke into the school's digital archives.
She cross-referenced Asher's name with every major financial database.
There was absolutely nothing on him before his arrival at St. Jude.
He was a ghost.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed with an unknown number.
"Meet me in the old library in ten minutes," the text read.
She knew exactly who it was.
Chloe navigated the dark, silent corridors of the academy, arriving at the abandoned library in the east wing.
Asher was waiting in the shadows, leaning against a dusty bookshelf.
"What do you want?" Chloe demanded, crossing her arms defensively.
"I want an invitation to The Vault," Asher replied smoothly.
Chloe's breath hitched.
The Vault was the academy's most exclusive, deeply hidden secret society.
It was a network of the most powerful heirs who controlled cheating rings, blackmailed teachers, and rigged college admissions.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she lied seamlessly.
"Stop playing games, Chloe," Asher stepped closer, invading her personal space.
"I know Preston runs it, and I know you have the clearance to get me inside the underground meeting tonight."
"And why would I do that?" she scoffed.
"Because if you don't, I call my guardian and have your family evicted by midnight," he threatened.
Chloe glared at him, realizing she had no choice.
"Fine, but if we get caught, it's on you," she agreed reluctantly.
An hour later, they were descending a hidden spiral staircase beneath the old gymnasium.
They reached heavy iron doors, and Chloe typed in the biometric passcode.
The doors swung open, revealing a lavish underground lounge filled with students in formal wear.
But as they stepped inside, a spotlight snapped directly onto them.
Preston Vanguard was standing on a balcony overlooking the room, holding a microphone.

"Well, well," Preston announced to the silent room.
"It seems we have a rat among us, and she brought a stray dog."
