Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

The courtroom erupted into sheer panic as Evelyn screamed in absolute terror.

People scrambled under the heavy wooden benches to hide from the drawn weapon.

My team immediately raised their rifles, placing red laser dots directly on Ryan's chest.

"Stay back, or I will blow her head off!" Ryan screamed, his hand trembling violently.

Evelyn sobbed uncontrollably, finally realizing the true monster she had helped create.

"Ryan, please, I am your mother!" she begged, tears ruining her expensive makeup.

"Shut up!" Ryan roared, pressing the gun harder against her temple.

I slowly lowered my pistol and raised my empty left hand to show I was unarmed.

"Let her go, Ryan, this is over," I said, taking a slow, measured step forward.

"It is never over!" he shouted wildly.

"Dad always loved you more, always trusted you with the real power!"

"I just wanted what was rightfully mine."

I kept my eyes locked on his, using every bit of psychological training I had learned in the military.

"You did not want the company, you just wanted the money from selling out your country," I corrected him softly.

I took another step closer, closing the distance to less than ten feet.

"If you pull that trigger, my men will put six bullets in your heart before her body hits the floor."

Ryan looked at the heavily armed operators standing behind me.

His arrogant confidence completely shattered, leaving only a terrified, pathetic boy.

For one tiny fraction of a second, he looked away from me to check the exits.

I did not hesitate.

I lunged forward, grabbing the hot barrel of the gun and twisting it violently upward.

The weapon fired harmlessly into the high ceiling, showering plaster down upon us.

I swept my leg behind his knees, sending him crashing hard onto the wooden floor.

I pressed my knee firmly into his chest and pinned his arms beneath my weight.

Bull rushed forward and quickly secured Ryan with heavy zip-ties.

Evelyn collapsed into a nearby chair, crying hysterically as she realized she had backed a murderer.

The judge peaked out from behind his heavy wooden bench, his face pale with shock.

Major Ethan Walker walked calmly to the front of the room holding a glowing smartphone.

"Your Honor, the Pentagon has officially authorized the complete declassification of Captain Cross's military record," Ethan announced clearly.

He handed the phone to the judge, displaying the highest level of federal clearance.
