Chapter 8 - The Blockade

"Brace for impact!" our driver yelled as he violently yanked the steering wheel to the left.

The rocket screamed past the passenger window, missing us by mere inches.

It exploded against a concrete barrier behind us, sending a shower of heavy debris into the air.

Our armored SUV skidded wildly across the empty highway before the driver regained control.

"Return fire!" Bull roared, rolling down his window and lifting his heavy assault rifle.

He fired short, controlled bursts at the mercenary trucks blocking our path.

I leaned out the rear window, my pistol gripped tightly in both hands.

I aimed for the front tire of the lead truck and squeezed the trigger three times.

The tire blew out in a violent explosion of rubber and sparks.

The heavy truck swerved out of control and crashed violently into the median wall.

"Push through the gap!" I shouted to the driver.

Our SUV smashed through the remaining space, scraping heavily against the second mercenary vehicle.

Sparks flew like fireworks as metal ground against metal at eighty miles per hour.

We broke free from the blockade and raced down the exit ramp toward the downtown courthouse.

"We are three minutes away," Bull announced, reloading his weapon.

My heart hammered against my ribs as the grand dome of the courthouse came into view.

We screeched to a halt on the front steps, ignoring the police barricades.

"Grab the server drives and stay right behind me," I ordered my team.

We sprinted up the massive marble steps, pushing past stunned reporters and terrified civilians.

I kicked open the main doors and ran down the long hallway toward Courtroom 302.

Through the glass windows of the doors, I could see the judge holding a pen.

He was extending the pen toward Ryan, who was eagerly reaching for the final estate documents.

If Ryan signed that paper, Cross Meridian Systems was lost forever.

I slammed my shoulder against the heavy wooden doors, bursting into the courtroom.

"Do not sign that document!" I yelled, my voice echoing off the high ceilings.

The entire room froze in absolute shock.

The judge dropped the pen, staring at me as if I were a ghost.

Ryan's face turned completely white as he saw my armed team carrying the secure servers.

He realized in that exact moment that his perfect plan had completely unraveled.

Desperation took over his mind, completely destroying his calm businessman facade.

Ryan lunged across the aisle, grabbed the bailiff's gun, and pressed the barrel against our mother's head.
