Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Secret

Richard stood in the foyer, grinning like a predator who had finally cornered his prey.

“Hello, Margaret,” he said, his voice dripping with decades of toxic arrogance.

He stepped fully into the house, completely ignoring the three tattooed criminals standing in the hallway.

Vanessa immediately rushed over to him, playing the role of the perfect, welcoming daughter-in-law.

“Richard, thank goodness you are here, Margaret is completely out of control!”

Richard chuckled, slowly unbuttoning his expensive suit jacket.

“Don’t worry, Vanessa, I have dealt with her hysterics before.”

He turned his cold, dead eyes toward me, relishing the fear he expected to see.

“It is time for you to pack your bags, Maggie, this house belongs to the men of the family now.”

I didn’t flinch, didn’t step back, and didn’t lower my lantern.

“You don’t own a single nail in this house, Richard.”

Daniel stepped forward, standing proudly beside his abusive father.

“He owns half of my shares, Mom, because we made a deal.”

The sheer betrayal in Daniel’s eyes was almost too much to bear.

“You sold out your own mother to a man who used to beat her?” I asked, my voice dangerously low.

Daniel shrugged, completely devoid of any moral conscience.

“Business is business, Mom, and Dad actually respects my hustle.”

Vanessa smirked, walking over to my hallway console table and carelessly picking up my antique jewelry box.

“Since you won’t be needing these anymore, I think I will hold onto them for safekeeping.”

She flipped the delicate wooden lid open, expecting to find my diamond earrings and pearl necklaces.

Instead, she frowned, pulling out a single, heavily folded piece of parchment paper.

“What is this junk?” she muttered, unfolding the paper in the dark.

I felt a sudden, sharp spike of adrenaline hit my chest.

When Daniel had emptied my safe, he must have carelessly shoved that document into the jewelry box.

Vanessa shined her phone’s flashlight onto the paper, her eyes scanning the faded ink.

Her smug expression instantly vanished, replaced by a look of profound, earth-shattering shock.

“Daniel...” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling violently.

Richard rolled his eyes, annoyed by the sudden interruption.

“Put the paper down, Vanessa, we have a house to clear out.”

“No,” Vanessa gasped, looking up at Richard with wide, terrified eyes.

She slowly turned the paper around, revealing a certified, original birth certificate from thirty-two years ago.

“This is Daniel’s real birth certificate,” Vanessa said, her voice echoing in the silent house.

Richard frowned, taking a step toward her. “So what?”

Vanessa swallowed hard, backing away from her husband.

“Richard is not the father listed on this document.”

The entire hallway went dead silent.

Daniel froze, his face turning the color of chalk.

Richard stopped walking, his eyes darting between me and the piece of paper in Vanessa’s shaking hand.

“What did you just say?” Richard growled, his voice dropping an octave.

“The father listed here is David Pierce,” Vanessa read aloud, trembling as she looked at Judge Ellen Pierce.

Ellen let out a soft, stunned gasp, covering her mouth with her hand.

David Pierce was Ellen’s late brother, a kind man I had briefly loved before I met Richard.

I had kept the secret to protect Daniel from Richard’s wrath during the divorce.

Richard slowly turned his head, locking his furious eyes onto Daniel.

“You are not my son?” Richard whispered, his fists clenching tightly at his sides.

Before Daniel could utter a single excuse, Spike’s encrypted cell phone rang loudly in the tense silence.

Spike answered it, listened for three seconds, and his face drained of all color.

“The cartel bosses just pulled into the driveway, and they know the money is missing,” Spike announced, dropping his crowbar.
