Chapter 1 - The Eviction Notice

I stepped out of my study and looked directly into Vanessa’s furious eyes.
She was gripping the edge of the granite kitchen island so hard her knuckles had turned completely white.
“You cannot do this to us,” she repeated, her voice echoing shrilly in the kitchen.
Daniel finally stopped leaning against the refrigerator and took a step forward to defend his wife.
“Mom, you are being completely unreasonable over a little bit of pasta sauce.”
I held up the printed eviction notice, the crisp white paper feeling like a shield in my hand.
“This has absolutely nothing to do with the sauce, Daniel.”
I placed the document on the counter right next to the crystal bowl Vanessa had slammed down moments ago.
“This is a formal thirty-day notice to vacate the premises, but I strongly suggest you pack your bags tonight.”
Vanessa let out a sharp, condescending laugh that grated on my nerves.
“You are bluffing, Margaret.”
She crossed her arms and glared at me with pure venom.
“Guests are arriving in less than an hour, and you are not going to cause a scene in front of my friends.”
I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and set it down next to the eviction notice.
“I have already called the caterer to cancel the food, and the locksmith is on his way.”
Daniel’s face went pale as he realized I was not playing a game.
“Mom, you can’t cancel the party, my potential investors are coming today!”
I stared coldly at the son I had raised, wondering when he had turned into such a cowardly grifter.
“You should have thought about your investors before you tried to forge a refinancing application on my house.”
The silence that followed was so absolute that I could hear the hum of the refrigerator.
Vanessa turned slowly to look at her husband, her eyes wide with shock.
“You told me the bank had already approved the loan for my boutique!”
Daniel swallowed hard, refusing to look his wife in the eye.
“I was going to tell you, Vanessa, but the paperwork just got a little complicated.”
I did not care about their marital disputes.
“You have until the locksmith arrives to gather your essential items and leave my property.”
Vanessa’s shock quickly morphed into a terrifying, unhinged anger.
She snatched her cell phone from the counter and dialed a number with trembling fingers.
“If you want to play dirty, Margaret, then we will play dirty.”
She placed the phone to her ear and stared at me with a triumphant smirk.
“Hello, 911?”
Daniel tried to grab the phone from her hand, but she swatted him away.
“Yes, I need police assistance immediately at the Hawthorne Estate.”
I stood perfectly still, fascinated by her audacity.
“My elderly mother-in-law is having a severe dementia episode and has become violently aggressive.”
She looked me dead in the eye as she spun her vicious lie to the dispatcher.
“She is threatening us, and I fear she might be a danger to herself and others.”
She hung up the phone and smiled at me like a predator.
“Let us see who the police believe, the successful young couple or the crazy old woman.”
I simply smiled back at her, feeling my decades of legal experience locking into place.
“You just made the biggest mistake of your life, Vanessa.”
Heavy footsteps suddenly pounded up the front porch stairs.
The front doorbell rang, but whoever it was did not wait for an answer.
The heavy oak door swung open, revealing two uniformed police officers stepping into my foyer.
I frowned, realizing there was no possible way the police could have arrived in less than thirty seconds.

The taller officer walked directly into the kitchen and pointed a finger at me.
“Margaret Hawthorne, you need to step away from the homeowners immediately.”
