Chapter 5 - The Shadows Below

The heavy darkness of the sealed house felt suffocating as Daniel’s flashlight beam danced across the walls.
Without electricity, the smart-home security system was completely paralyzed.
“You cut the power lines to your own supposed property?” Ellen asked, her voice dripping with absolute contempt.
Daniel kept the flashlight pointed toward the floor, clearly enjoying the chaos he had created.
“The battery backup on the magnetic door locks only lasts for fifteen minutes,” he explained smugly.
“Once the batteries die, the front door will pop open, and my father will walk right in.”
Vanessa clapped her hands in the dark, her jewelry jingling like a warning bell.
“This is perfect! We can literally just wait you out.”
I refused to let them see me sweat.
I had built a career on finding the hidden exits in impossible situations.
“You are making a massive miscalculation, Daniel,” I warned him softly.
“When the backup battery fails, the security company automatically dispatches an armed response team.”
Daniel laughed, a hollow, echoing sound in the dark kitchen.
“I already called the security company and canceled our account using your forged signature.”
He really had planned every single detail to ensure I was completely trapped.
Ellen grabbed my arm and pulled me gently toward the hallway, away from the flashlight beam.
“Margaret, we need to get to your office safe,” Ellen whispered directly into my ear.
“If we can secure the original, physical deed, we can tie up his fraudulent transfer in litigation for years.”
I nodded in the dark, knowing exactly where I had hidden the real paperwork.
“Daniel and Vanessa,” I called out, my voice echoing down the hall.
“If you want to sit in the dark and wait for a monster, be my guest.”
Ellen and I quickly moved through the shadows, relying on my intimate knowledge of the house to navigate.
We slipped into my study and I immediately locked the heavy wooden door behind us.
I pulled a small, battery-powered emergency lantern from my desk drawer and turned it on.
The dim yellow light revealed the massive iron safe hidden behind a bookshelf.
“Hurry, Margaret, we only have about ten minutes before the locks fail,” Ellen urged.
I spun the dial on the safe, my practiced hands moving swiftly through the complex combination.
The heavy iron door clicked open with a satisfying thud.
I reached inside to grab the thick leather folder containing my most vital documents.
But my hand touched nothing but cold, empty metal.
I froze, shining the lantern directly into the cavernous safe.
It was completely empty.
Not a single document, jewelry box, or cash reserve was left inside.
“He already emptied it,” I whispered, the crushing weight of the betrayal hitting me again.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy thumping noise began echoing from directly beneath our feet.
It sounded like someone was hitting the floorboards from inside the basement.
Ellen looked down, her eyes wide with confusion.
“Margaret, is someone else trapped in this house with us?”
I shook my head, my heart pounding fiercely against my ribs.
“No, I haven’t used that basement in years, the door is padlocked shut.”
The thumping grew louder, more violent, as if someone was desperately trying to break through the floor.
Then, a harsh, unfamiliar male voice echoed through the air vents connecting the basement to the study.
“Hey, Dan! The power just went out down here, you better fix it before the servers crash!”
Ellen and I stared at each other in absolute horror.

Daniel hadn’t just tried to steal the house.
He had secretly rented out my basement to someone hiding in the dark.
