Chapter 8 - The Standoff

Red and blue lights illuminated the street as a dozen police cruisers swarmed the neighborhood.
Detective Miller stepped out from behind a reinforced car door with his weapon drawn.
He yelled through the megaphone that the entire conversation had just been broadcast to the federal database.
Connor froze, his eyes darting frantically between me and the heavy police presence.
He realized the live audio feed had just captured him admitting to the cover-up and holding me at gunpoint.
He tightened his grip on my arm and pulled me in front of him as a human shield.
He pressed the gun harder against my ribs and screamed at the police to back off.
Marcus groaned from the pavement and begged Connor not to do anything stupid.
I could feel Connor's heart pounding aggressively against my back.
He was a coward who had always relied on his mother to solve his problems.
I knew he did not have the nerve to actually pull the trigger if it meant ruining his own life.
I spoke softly, making sure the microphone on the laptop in his hand could still pick up my voice.
I told him Chloe had emptied the offshore account ten minutes ago and Brenda had nothing left.
I lied and said the police were already arresting Brenda in her hospital room for conspiracy.
Connor hesitated for a crucial second, his greedy mind trying to process the loss of the money.
That split second of distraction was all I needed.
I slammed my elbow backward directly into his nose with all my strength.
Connor cried out in pain and stumbled backward, dropping the gun onto the asphalt.
I kicked the weapon under the car and sprinted toward the police barricade.
A SWAT team rushed past me and tackled Connor to the ground.
They pinned him against the concrete and slapped heavy cuffs on his wrists.
Detective Miller holstered his weapon and walked over to me.
He apologized for arresting me earlier and said they had enough evidence to take down the entire syndicate.
I took a deep breath, finally feeling safe for the first time in months.
But as I looked back at Marcus, his face was completely pale.
May you like
He pointed a shaking finger at the laptop screen resting on the pavement.
A final, automated wire transfer had just been initiated from my personal bank account.
