Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

A year later, the sprawling headquarters of the newly rebranded Apex Solutions was bustling with activity.
I stood in my corner office, looking out at the city skyline through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
I had taken full control of the company and completely rebuilt it from the ground up.
The fraudulent investors were gone, replaced by ethical partners who valued transparency and innovation.
My father's legacy was secure, and the company was more profitable than it had ever been.
Brenda had been sentenced to twenty years in a federal penitentiary with no chance of early parole.
Connor was serving ten years in a medium-security facility, working in the prison laundry room.
The house they tried to steal from me was beautifully restored and officially mine forever.
I had finally found peace, closure, and a life entirely on my own terms.
Marcus knocked on my open door and walked in with a warm, proud smile.
He handed me the final quarter financial report showing a record-breaking profit margin.
I hugged him and thanked him for standing by me when nobody else would.
We raised a cup of coffee to the future, knowing the dark days were completely behind us.
The nightmare was finally over.
I sat down at my massive mahogany desk to review the afternoon contracts.
My assistant walked into the office carrying the daily stack of physical mail.
She placed a thick, unmarked black envelope perfectly in the center of my desk.
I sliced the envelope open with my silver letter opener.
Inside was a single polaroid photograph of my father, looking healthy and deeply tanned, sitting on a tropical beach reading today's newspaper.

Written on the back of the photo in my father's unmistakable handwriting was a short message.
"Thanks for the ten million, kid, but Chloe and I are going to need more."
