Chapter 3 - The Interrogation Room

I stared across the metal table at the woman who had systematically ruined my life.

Brenda opened her leather briefcase with slow and deliberate movements.

She pulled out a single sheet of paper and slid it across the table toward me.

It was a full confession.

She told me that if I signed it, Connor would generously drop the civil suit against me.

She promised I would only serve three to five years in a minimum-security prison.

If I refused, she guaranteed I would be locked away for decades.

I pushed the paper back across the table.

I told her I would rather die than give her my signature.

The high-powered attorney leaned forward and reminded me that the digital trail was bulletproof.

He said the authorities already had my laptop and my hard drives in evidence.

A cold realization hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

I had left my backup drives hidden in the floorboards of my father's house.

If Brenda's people got to that house before Marcus did, my only proof of innocence would be destroyed.

I stood up and demanded my right to make a phone call.

The attorney laughed and told me my phone had already been confiscated.

Suddenly, a loud commotion echoed from the hallway outside the interrogation room.

The heavy door was kicked open.

Marcus walked in wearing a rumpled trench coat and carrying a massive stack of manila folders.

He slammed a court order onto the table right over Brenda's fake confession.

He announced that he had just posted my bail and secured a federal block on all of Connor's assets.

Brenda's confident smile instantly vanished.

She told Marcus he was making a terrible mistake getting involved in family business.

Marcus looked at her with pure disgust.

He told Brenda she was going to pay for what she did to his best friend.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the room.

We hurried down the hallway toward the precinct exit.

I thanked Marcus for saving me.

May you like

He stopped in his tracks and looked at me with a grim expression.

He said we were not safe yet because Brenda had already sent a demolition crew to my father's house.
