Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

My father smiled a wicked, predatory smile as the blinding spotlight illuminated our terrified faces in the narrow alley.
He casually straightened his expensive silk tie, looking completely unbothered by the heavy rain soaking his tailored suit.
He mocked Julian for trying to play the hero, calling him a pathetic disappointment who always ruined perfect plans.
My mother stepped out from the darkness behind him, holding a small umbrella and looking at me with pure, unadulterated disgust.
She coldly stated that I had always been a massive burden, an ungrateful child who refused to die quietly.
I stared at the woman who gave birth to me, feeling the last remaining shreds of my familial love turn into absolute hatred.
I loudly demanded to know why they hated me so much that they would resort to slow, torturous poison.
My father laughed, a cruel, hollow sound that echoed violently against the wet brick walls of the dark alleyway.
He revealed that the multi-million dollar corporate account they had embezzled from actually belonged to a dangerous international syndicate.
The syndicate had discovered the massive theft and demanded full repayment with a terrifying, bloody deadline.
They needed the clean money from my medical trust and my life insurance policy to pay off the ruthless killers.
Julian aggressively raised his stolen tactical rifle, pointing the barrel directly at our father's chest.
He screamed that he would not let them hurt me anymore, his voice cracking with desperate, unexpected bravery.
My father did not flinch, simply snapping his fingers to signal the heavily armed mercenaries surrounding us.
The mercenaries raised their weapons, completely ready to execute all three of us without a single ounce of hesitation.
Marcus slowly stepped forward, keeping his hands raised high in the air to show he was entirely unarmed.
He calmly informed my father that killing us would completely destroy any chance of accessing the medical trust fund.
Marcus explained that he had implemented a strict dead-man's switch on my financial accounts just twelve hours ago.
If my heart stopped beating, the trust fund would instantly, automatically donate every single penny to a global charity.
My father’s arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of pure, uncontrolled, and desperate fury.
He realized that he could not kill me, but the syndicate would definitely kill him if he failed to pay the debt.
He ordered his men to lower their weapons, furiously demanding that Marcus deactivate the security protocol immediately.
Marcus bravely refused, stating that the only way to get the money was to let us walk away completely unharmed.

Before my father could negotiate, the sound of multiple approaching police sirens echoed loudly down the city block.
My mother pulled a concealed silver handgun from her designer purse and pointed it directly at my face.
