Chapter 3 - The Glass Fortress

We drove in silence for two hours. The adrenaline slowly bled out of my system, replaced by a heavy, suffocating exhaustion and an overwhelming sense of dread. The snowstorm intensified, blanketing the highway in a thick, blinding white.
Eventually, we pulled off a deserted exit and navigated a winding dirt road surrounded by dense pine forests. We arrived at The Glass Fortress—a fully self-sustaining, off-the-grid architectural marvel I had built years ago as a private retreat. It was heavily fortified, equipped with bulletproof glass and an independent security grid.
Marcus and a team of four armed guards were already there, securing the perimeter. I parked the Aston inside the heated garage and killed the engine.
I stepped out and opened Clara's door. She looked completely shattered. I gently offered my hand, and for the first time in six months, she took it. Her skin was freezing.
I led her into the massive, warmly lit living room. A fire was already blazing in the stone hearth. Clara sank into a deep leather sofa, gently unwrapping Maya. The baby was awake, her tiny fists waving in the warm air, completely undisturbed by the chaos of the night.
I stood by the window, looking out into the dark woods, unable to face them. The silence stretched until it became unbearable.
"Nine months," I said, my voice hoarse. I turned to look at her. "You went through the pregnancy, the labor, the birth... alone. Because you were terrified of me."
"I wasn't terrified of you, Julian," Clara said, her voice cracking. "I was terrified for you."
She looked down at Maya, tracing a finger over the baby's cheek. "When Sterling initiated the hostile takeover last spring, you were consumed. You didn't sleep. You stopped coming home. You were fighting a war."
"It was my company," I defended, though the words tasted like ash.
"I know," she whispered. "But one night, Victor cornered me in the parking garage of the hospital after my ultrasound. He told me that Sterling knew I was pregnant. He said that if I didn't convince you to surrender the company, they would ensure I suffered a 'tragic accident' before the baby was born."
The floor seemed to drop out from under me. "What?"
"Victor said you were a machine, Julian. But a machine with a wife and a child is vulnerable. He was going to use my life, and Maya's life, to force you to surrender everything you had built."
"Why didn't you tell me?!" I roared, the anger not aimed at her, but at my own blindness.
May you like
"Because I knew what you would do!" she fired back, tears streaming down her face. "You would have killed him, Julian! You would have gone to prison, or they would have killed you first! The only way to remove your vulnerability was to remove myself from your life. I demanded a divorce so Sterling would think you didn't care about me anymore. I broke my own heart to keep you both alive."
I fell to my knees in front of the sofa, the billionaire titan completely broken. I buried my face in Clara's lap, my shoulders shaking as I wept for the first time since I was a child.
