Chapter 3 - The Intruder

I threw myself entirely to the left just as the suppressed pistol fired.

The bullet shattered the metal door of the storage locker right where my head had been.

I grabbed the handgun from the locker and scrambled behind a row of heavy vending machines.

The bustling noise of the train station completely masked the sound of the silent gunshot.

I clutched the cold metal of the gun, my knuckles turning white from the terrifying grip.

I had never fired a weapon in my entire life, but I was not going to die in a dirty transit hub.

Heavy, measured footsteps slowly approached my hiding spot.

The man in the trench coat was hunting me with calm, terrifying precision.

I took a deep breath, stepped out from behind the machine, and aimed the gun at his legs.

I pulled the heavy trigger.

The gunshot echoed deafeningly through the concourse, sending dozens of commuters screaming in panic.

My bullet missed his leg, but the sheer shock of the noise made him dive for cover.

I used the chaotic stampede of terrified passengers to slip out through the emergency exit.

I ran for six blocks until my lungs burned and my legs felt like lead.

I ducked into a small, dimly lit internet cafe and rented a computer in the far back corner.

My hands shook violently as I plugged Sarah’s silver flash drive into the USB port.

The screen filled with hundreds of offshore banking documents and wire transfer receipts.

Every single illegal document bore a flawless forgery of my own signature.

Daniel was using the fake wife to launder millions of dollars for a ruthless criminal syndicate.

When the inevitable federal audit happened, Daniel would walk away clean, and I would spend my life in a federal prison.

I needed to retrieve my passport and the emergency cash I kept hidden in my home safe.

I waited until nightfall before taking a taxi to my quiet, upscale suburban neighborhood.

I bypassed the front door and slipped through the unlocked garden gate in the backyard.

The house was completely dark, silent, and seemingly empty.

I crept up the carpeted stairs, avoiding the loose floorboard on the second step.

I reached the master bedroom and opened the hidden wall safe behind the painting.

Just as I grabbed my passport, I heard the distinct sound of the hardwood floor creaking in the hallway.

Someone was walking slowly toward my bedroom.

I quietly slipped inside the massive walk-in closet and pulled the louvered doors shut.

The bedroom door clicked open, and the heavy footsteps entered the room.

Through the wooden slats of the closet door, I saw my best friend, Mia, walking into the moonlight.
