Chapter 1 - The Warning

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone.
The anonymous text messages burned into my mind like a physical threat.
The black luxury SUV had already disappeared into the chaotic downtown traffic.
My heart pounded so fiercely against my ribs that I could barely catch my breath.
This was not a simple corporate misunderstanding.
Someone was actively monitoring my movements outside my husband's own company.
I looked back at the revolving glass doors of the massive corporate headquarters.
The security guard who had laughed at me was now watching me with narrowed eyes.
I quickly turned around and walked toward the underground parking garage.
My hands shook as I gripped the handles of my leather purse.
I needed to find Daniel's executive assistant, Sarah, and demand the truth.
I had just seen her hand a thick, mysterious envelope to the blonde woman pretending to be me.
I slipped past the parking gate and hid behind a concrete pillar in the shadows.
The damp air of the garage smelled heavily of exhaust fumes and cold concrete.
Ten minutes later, the heavy metal door to the elevator lobby clicked open.
Sarah walked out, typing frantically on her smartphone.
She looked entirely different from the composed, professional assistant I had known for years.
Her face was pale, and she kept looking nervously over her shoulder.
I stepped out from behind the concrete pillar and blocked her path.
Sarah gasped loudly, dropping her expensive phone onto the hard pavement.
I demanded to know exactly what was in the envelope she just handed to the fake Mrs. Harrison.
Tears instantly filled Sarah's wide, terrified eyes.
She grabbed my arm with trembling hands and pulled me back into the shadows.
She whispered that Daniel was not the man I thought he was.
Before she could explain further, the screeching sound of tires echoed through the garage.
A matte black van accelerated violently down the ramp, heading directly toward us.
Sarah screamed and shoved me hard against the concrete pillar.
She shoved a small, electronic keycard into my jacket pocket.
May you like
The van's side door slid open to reveal three men wearing dark tactical masks.
They were not here to talk.
