Chapter 5 - The Hospital Lockdown

The room spun violently as the reality of my pregnancy crashed over me.

I was carrying Julian's child, and this monstrous family saw my baby as nothing more than medicine.

I grabbed Leo by the arm and told him we had to get back to the hospital immediately.

We sprinted down the grand staircase and threw ourselves into Leo’s beat-up truck hidden in the woods.

Leo drove recklessly down the winding mountain roads, pushing the old engine to its absolute limit.

He warned me that Arthur had likely already bribed the hospital administrators to release Julian into their custody.

I clutched my purse against my chest, feeling the heavy black ledger resting safely inside.

When we finally reached the hospital parking lot, my worst fears were confirmed.

The building was completely surrounded by private security vehicles bearing the family’s corporate logo.

Armed men in tactical suits were guarding every single entrance and exit.

Leo cursed loudly and pulled the truck behind a row of tall hedges to stay hidden.

He told me that the local police had completely abandoned the property.

Arthur had enacted a full corporate lockdown under the guise of protecting a high-profile patient.

I refused to sit in the truck and wait for them to steal my husband.

I told Leo about a subterranean service tunnel that connected the hospital kitchen to the laundry facility.

We snuck across the damp grass and pried open a rusted metal grate hidden behind the dumpsters.

We crawled through the dark, foul-smelling tunnel, navigating entirely by the dim light of my cell phone.

When we finally pushed through the trapdoor into the hospital basement, the building was eerily silent.

We crept up the emergency stairwell, avoiding the main elevators where the security teams were stationed.

I pushed the heavy fire door open on the intensive care floor, desperate to reach Julian’s room.

The hallway was completely empty, the nurses having been aggressively evacuated by Arthur's men.

I ran to room 412, tears of pure panic streaming down my face.

I burst through the door, ready to fight whoever was standing inside.

But the room was completely empty.

The bed was stripped bare, the IV lines were violently ripped from the wall, and Julian was gone.

Lying in the center of the pristine mattress was a single, terrifying object.

It was a perfectly clean ultrasound photo of an unborn baby, with a red target drawn directly over the screen.
