Chapter 2 - The Toxicology Report

We arrived at the emergency room in an absolute blur of chaotic motion.

Nurses rushed Julian through the double doors, shouting medical codes I did not understand.

I was forced to wait in the sterile, brightly lit waiting room for two agonizing hours.

I paced the floor, staring at my phone, wondering if I should call my own parents.

Before I could make a decision, the heavy glass doors of the waiting room slid open.

Julian’s parents, Arthur and Beatrice, marched in flanked by two men in dark suits.

Arthur did not ask how his son was doing.

He walked directly up to me and demanded to know where the glass vial was.

I stood my ground and told him it was in the hands of the medical staff.

Beatrice sneered at me, calling me a hysterical, ungrateful girl who was ruining a sacred family tradition.

Arthur signaled to the men in suits, ordering them to find the hospital administrator immediately.

He bragged that the family's money practically built this hospital, and he was taking Julian to a private facility.

I panicked, knowing that if they took Julian away, I would never see him alive again.

Suddenly, the double doors swung open, and a young doctor walked out holding a tablet.

Arthur immediately tried to intercept him, demanding his son's release papers.

The doctor ignored the wealthy patriarch entirely and walked straight over to me.

He confirmed that I was Julian's wife and asked me to follow him into a private consultation room.

Arthur screamed threats in the hallway as the heavy wooden door clicked shut behind us.

The doctor looked terrified, his hands trembling slightly as he set the tablet on the desk.

He told me that the toxicology screen had come back with impossible results.

Julian had not been poisoned or drugged with any known narcotic.

The doctor explained that my husband’s system was flooded with a synthetic paralytic used exclusively in large animal veterinary medicine.

But that was not the worst part.

The doctor pulled up a microscopic image of the residue found inside the tiny glass vial.

May you like

He told me the vial did not contain a drug that was meant to be injected into Julian.

The vial contained fresh human spinal fluid that had been brutally extracted from my husband.
