Chapter 8 - The Trap Is Set

I walked out the back door into the freezing night to find Tom.
He was chopping firewood near a small shed, his breath pluming in the cold air.
I explained the entire situation to him, leaving out no embarrassing details.
I told him about the stalking, the broken window, and their plan to ambush us.
Tom leaned on his heavy splitting ax and let out a low whistle.
"I don't take kindly to trespassers on my mountain," Tom growled softly.
"What do you need me to do, little lady?"
We quickly formulated a plan to protect the property line.
The next morning, Christmas Day, the sky was clear and bright blue.
Chloe, Michael, and I sat near the window, watching the long dirt driveway.
At exactly 9:00 AM, Chris's massive SUV came crunching up the snowy road.
They parked aggressively near the edge of the property, blocking the exit.
My mother marched out first, looking incredibly angry and entitled.
Chris and Ashley followed close behind, holding manila envelopes filled with repair bills.
They marched purposefully up the walkway, ready for a massive confrontation.
Before they could even reach the first wooden step, Tom stepped out from the trees.
He was holding a large, intimidating hunting rifle slung casually over his shoulder.
"That's far enough, folks," Tom announced in a voice like gravel.
My mother stopped dead in her tracks, clutching her designer purse.
"Excuse me, we are here to see my daughter," she demanded haughtily.
"Move out of the way, you crazy old man."
Tom didn't flinch, and he certainly didn't move.
"This is private property, and the renters have clearly stated you are not welcome," Tom replied.
"You have exactly ten seconds to get back in that ugly car before I call the sheriff."
Chris puffed up his chest and took an aggressive step toward Tom.
"You can't keep us away from our own family," Chris threatened loudly.
Tom simply reached into his thick jacket and pulled out a two-way radio.
"Sheriff Davis? It's Tom," he spoke clearly into the device.
"I've got three aggressive trespassers up at the ridge cabin."
My mother's face turned bright red as she realized they were losing control again.

She looked directly at the cabin window, knowing I was watching.
Suddenly, she clutched her chest and collapsed dramatically into the snow.
