Chapter 5 - Caught In The Act

The flashing police lights illuminated my family's terrified faces on the porch.

Two uniformed officers stepped out of the cruiser with their flashlights shining brightly.

"Step away from the door and keep your hands where we can see them," the taller officer commanded.

Chris immediately raised his hands, looking completely terrified.

"Officers, there's a misunderstanding," Chris stammered nervously.

"This is my sister's house, she's just refusing to open the door."

My mother put on her best innocent smile and stepped forward.

"Yes, officer, my daughter is having a little emotional episode," she lied smoothly.

The second officer shined his flashlight down the side of the house.

"Then why is the laundry room window smashed in?" the officer asked sternly.

Ashley shrank back against the siding, suddenly looking very small.

"I had to get inside, my children are freezing!" she cried defensively.

The tall officer shook his head and pulled a heavy radio from his belt.

"We received an alert from the property owner's security system," the officer explained.

"The owner of this house is a Mr. Vance, and he reported a break-in."

My family froze in absolute confusion.

"Who the hell is Mr. Vance?" Chris asked, genuinely bewildered.

"My sister Emily owns this house."

The officer crossed his arms and looked at them with zero sympathy.

"According to city records, this property was legally sold yesterday morning," he stated.

"You are trespassing on private property, and one of you just committed destruction of property."

My mother's jaw practically hit the floor.

"Sold? She didn't sell her house!" my mother shrieked, losing all her composure.

The officers ignored her and pulled out their handcuffs.

"Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your back," the officer instructed Ashley.

Ashley burst into hysterical tears as the cold metal clicked around her wrists.

Chris started arguing loudly, which only made the officers more aggressive.

I sat in the warm cabin, watching the entire scene unfold on a tiny screen.

I had warned them I wasn't hosting this year.

They chose to test my boundaries, and now they were paying the price.

Suddenly, Chris pulled out his phone and started dialing.

My phone rang loudly in the quiet cabin, flashing his name on the screen.

This time, I decided to answer it.

"Emily, tell these cops right now that you own this house!" Chris screamed into the phone.
