Chapter 6 - The Bitter Truth

"I can't do that, Chris," I said calmly into the receiver.
"Why not?" he screamed, his voice filled with panic and rage.
"Because the officer is telling you the truth," I replied.
"I sold the house, and I don't live there anymore."
Dead silence fell over the phone line for three long seconds.
I could hear the police officers reading Ashley her rights in the background.
"You sold your house without telling us?" Chris finally gasped.
"I told you I wasn't hosting this year," I reminded him coldly.
"You all decided my boundaries were a joke, so I removed the house from the equation."
My mother snatched the phone right out of Chris's hand.
"Emily, you fix this right now!" she screeched into the microphone.
"Your sister is being arrested, and my grandchildren are crying in the car!"
I took a deep breath, feeling a lifetime of guilt suddenly melt away.
"Ashley broke a window, Mom," I said steadily.
"Actions have consequences, and you all need to learn that."
"Where are you?" she demanded furiously.
"We demand to come to wherever you are staying right now."
I let out a short, hollow laugh.
"No, Mom," I said firmly.
"You can rent a hotel, or you can drive back home."
"If you abandon us tonight, you are no longer my daughter," she threatened fiercely.
It was the same emotional blackmail she had used on me for years.
But tonight, it didn't work.
"Goodbye, Mom," I said softly, and hung up the phone.
I blocked all of their numbers and deleted the family group chat.
Michael poured me another glass of wine and kissed my forehead.
We spent the rest of the week enjoying the snow, sleeping in late, and baking cookies.
It was the most peaceful Christmas I had ever experienced in my adult life.
On Christmas Eve, I felt completely disconnected from the toxic drama of my past.
But that evening, there was a heavy, unexpected knock on the heavy wooden door of our rented cabin.
I froze, instantly terrified that they had somehow tracked us down.
Michael stood up, picked up the fireplace poker, and walked cautiously toward the door.

He looked through the peephole, and his shoulders immediately dropped.
"You need to see this, Emily," he said, stepping aside and unlocking the deadbolt.
